Let me just start by saying I love this author and usually buy her books without hesitation. But this story, along with a few others of hers, just wasn’t it.Rashad is no hero and no prize. He was emotionally unavailable, a liar, hypocritical, jealous/possessive, and a bit conniving for 96% of the book. I understand there is past trauma, but he is 33 years old still acting this way.Ladies, you cannot save a man. Good sex and nice dates is not enough to have a healthy relationship. The theme in the majority of romance novels is the broken man and the woman coming along and having to be responsible for his healing while he does little to none of the actual emotional work to better himself. Please let go of this “I want to be better for you and only you so I’ll finally tell you about my past after lying and hiding it for the majority of our relationship then do no work after that” narrative. It’s tired and annoying and the women in these stories deserve better. And it sets up an unrealistic view of love and relationships for the real world.I understand no one is perfect and I understand there needs to be a plot line for the story, but these men need to do better. They cannot act however they want and still get the girl at the end with little to no recourse. And the women authors need to hold their “heroes” to a higher standard than the bear minimum they’re held at now. Such was the case with the suave debonair Rashad who was so afraid of how people would react to his familial problems chose to hide them from the one person who was in all the way with him from the very beginning. That person was the beautiful, smart and loyal Layla, personal assistant to a high powered businessman Ethan. Ethan paid her a hefty salary with perks most of us can only dream of and without any harassment of any kind to boot. Needless to say Rashad and Layla went through their own set of obstacles the first time around and the second time seemed to be heading in the same direction until Rashad mounted the courage to tell Layla all about the secret of his father's crimes and his mother's abandonment. This story chronicles how leaving secrets as secrets can derail the best of relationships. It can also stop the person with the secrets from ever getting closure or finding peace. I am glad he realized that the people who matter knowing his secrets, would not blame him for the crimes of his dad. In fact I consider Rashad to not only be a success story but a hero for being the catalyst that led to his father getting what he deserved. Reuniting with his mother and other members of his family he did not even know existed raised the cry bar in this story for me. Great story and really good characters that displayed loads of love and friendship for each other. You did it again Delaney! Now on to Dana's story next!
